Plettenberg Bay
Plettenberg Bay
is often referred to as the Jewel of the Garden Route.
The Portuguese sailors named it in the 15th century "bahia formosa" =
beautiful bay. But already 100,000 years ago humans settled in this
mild climate. Today not only citizens from Johannesburg and Cape Town
look for relaxation in this somewhat stable climate, which is influenced by
the relatively warm Indian Ocean.
In some guide books Plett (as the people in Plettenberg Bay call
their town) is called a "stylish sea resort". As a European, one
visualises Travemünde, Blackpool, Eastbourne or Marbella. This is
not really the case. Plettenberg Bay is a quiet town with 45,000 inhabitants.
There are a lot of good shops, supermarkets and restaurants, but
after a good dinner people and tourists go home, because afterwards there is
nothing to do and nowhere to go.
Therefore Plettenberg Bay is the ideal place for relaxation. 15 kilometres of
the best sandy beaches (Robberg Beach, Central Beach, Look Out Beach,
Keurboom Beach) offer the best opportunities for an enjoyable beach life.
